Nathaniel chooses not to go with his father because in the text, it says “Families don’t have to be blood relations,” Nathaniel reckoned. So this means Nathaniel regarded Basil as family. When Nathaniel’s dad comes, he only wants Nathaniel to help clear land and to work.

Nathanial says goodbye to his father and not go with him because he wants to stay with Basil. He has rescued him from Mr. Owin and treated him fairly.

I think that Nate was very brave to fight when he knew he was the underdog, but he fought anyway, and defended the bridge, and, suprisingly, won.
