Were the English Colonists Right?

200px-jamesiengland.jpgIn 1607,  England established the first permanent colony in Jamestown.  King James gave his permission and blessing.  The London Company of Virginia provided the ships and the men.  However, did the colonists have the right to settle in Jamestown?  Defend your yes or no answer.

No. That was Native American land and they took it.:(

The settlers didn’t have the right to settle in the Indian’s land because the Indian came there much before any people came there and naturally made their own tribe. They should’ve looked on the rest of the East coast to find easier places to settle and live in before they had a disease cultivate like the smallpox epidemic.

Well, at first Powhatan was fine with them coming to their land, but when they started taking over his nation he got mad at them [:(

I feel that they didn’t have the right because the Powatans thought that they were just like all the animals so they thought that there was no need for owning land and that it should be shared. However the English Men thought that everything must be owned by someone. I wouldn’t like it if they thought that they should own the land that we all share.

So my over all answer would be:

NO! They didn’t have the right to settle in Jamestown!

No, because they thought every land they stepped on was theirs. They kept pushing Powhaten tribes west, into the Piedmont Region. They also carried dieases that they spread to the Native People.

No I don’t think that the English did not have the right to try to claim the Powhatan’s land because after all, the Powhatan were there first. At first when they just came, the Powhatan were ok with the English on their land. But when they started trying to claim the Powhatan’s land, they got mad and began war. The English did not have the right to claim the Powhatan’s land. They should have just found another place to settle besides where the Powhatan were.

No i dont think that the English had any right to claim the powhatans land because it was rightfully the powhatans not the English.

The colonists had no right to settle in Virginia because it is Indian land :-(

I think the English did not have any right to settle in Jamestown because the Native Americans were already here. They also had no right at all to claim it as King James’.
